Decisions on outside activities

A review of the basic provisions regulating the acceptance of outside activities.

The following analysis of outside activities may be useful in making the right decision about what kind of outside activities conform with United Nations rules and regulations.

Staff Rule 101.2 (p):

Staff members shall not, except in the normal course of official duties or with the prior approval of the Secretary-General, engage in any of the following acts, if such act relates to the purpose, activities or interests of the United Nations:

  • Issue statements to the press, radio or other agencies of public information;
  • Accept speaking engagements;
  • Take part in film, theatre, radio or television productions;
  • Submit articles, books or other material for publication.
